The Keeper of The Flame

“I never knew I’d be a jazz singer,” says Harvey Thompson, whose smooth and smoky jazz vocals have won him a core of dedicated fans in his adopted country of Japan. “I wanted to be a professional bowler. ”With his silky smooth voice, comfortable stage presence, and wide repertoire, reflecting influences ranging from Johnny Hartman to Nat King Cole, Harvey can be considered “the keeper of the flame” of male jazz vocals. Thompson grew up with music in his native Detroit with a family gospel group called the ‘Thompson Spiritualettes’ who played at churches and gospel revivals. Harvey says the key moment in his career was when he first heard “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman,” the 1963 album that remains the gold standard for male jazz vocals. Harvey’s forte is interpreting classics from the Great American Songbook and he released an album entitled “Jazz Is Anything You Want It to Be”. Find out more about Harvey at http://htjazzis.com.
