The speakers: David Zoppetti, Gregory Khezrnejat, Satoshi Gunji
The mastery of writing in a foreign language for outsiders is always a fascinating journey. To find out more the library will host two non-Japanese authors whose award-winning works of fiction in a language not their own have earned them top literary recognition in a country with few such admirable examples.
The talk will focus on their passion for the Japanese language, the experience of breaking into a literary world still dominated by native writers and their exploration of linguistic expression and reinvention.
Joining the rich debate is also a speaker from a leading publisher who will share his thoughts on Japanese literary awards and emerging trends. A veteran editor with nearly 40 years in Japanese publishing will explain how Japan’s literary prizes work and the role they play, and reflect on the extraordinary surge in entries in the AI era. Must Japanese literature be written in Japanese?
David Zoppetti is a novelist born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1962. A graduate of Doshisha University in Japanese literature, he won the Subaru Literary Prize in 1996 for his debut novel, Ichigen-san, which was also shortlisted for the Akutagawa Prize and adapted into a film. He has published nine books in Japanese, and is about to publish Reiwa-Ishi, a novel which explores Japan’s population decline through an alternative history of the Reiwa era.
Gregory Khezrnejat is a novelist and Associate Professor at Hosei University. Born in South Carolina, US, in 1984, he earned a Ph.D. in Japanese Literature from Doshisha University in 2017. His debut novel, Kamogawa Runner, won the 2nd Kyoto Literature Award. He received the 9th Waseda University Tsubouchi Shoyo Encouragement Award in 2023, and Kaikonchi and Trajectory were both shortlisted for the Akutagawa Prize.
