The election of Sanae Takaichi as president of Japan’s majority Liberal Democratic Party, opening the door for her to become Japan’s first woman prime minister, sparked what market players termed a “Takaichi trade” on October 6, causing the benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average to leap by 4 percent to a new record high of  over 48,000.

Market expectations that Takaichi and her team will push fiscal stimulus for Japan’s economy, as well as  accommodative monetary policy, were behind the jump. But was this what former US Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan might have called another case of “irrational exuberance?”

The Japanese government is already deeply in debt (as are those of many other leading economies) and further debt-funded fiscal stimulus could be risky. Likewise, stock markets, including Tokyo’s, are already at record highs and in what some analysts believe to be dangerous “bubble” territory. How will Takaichi’s effective revival of “Abenomics” work out in today’s very different economic environment? Deep Dive will analyse the opportunities - and risks of Takaichinomics. The panelists are:

Naomi Fink: Chief Global Strategist, Amova Asset Management.
Jesper Koll: Global Ambassador and Expert Director at Monex Group and an Investment Committee member of the Japan Catalyst Fund.
Richard Katz: Author of "The Contest for Japan’s Economic Future: Entrepreneurs vs Corporate Giants."
