What happens when Japan and Major League Baseball collide?
Join Robert Whiting - best-selling author and longtime FCCJ member - as he teams up with American photographer Mark Edward Harris on stage for an entertaining look at the extraordinary relationship between Japan’s star players and Major League Baseball. The FCCJ Exhibition Committee invites Whiting to talk about the three Japanese stars of the LA Dodgers—Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki - and the remarkable history of Japanese players in Major League Baseball. They will also discuss Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in 1947.
Robert Whiting is the author of the international bestseller You Gotta Have Wa, named by Esquire as one of the "best baseball books ever written." He received the 2023 Henry Chadwick Award, honoring outstanding contributions to baseball writing. His first book, The Chrysanthemum and the Bat, was praised by James Fallows of The Atlantic as "the most illuminating book on Japan I have ever read, and the funniest." His other books, including Tokyo Underworld and Tokyo Junkie, have been optioned by Hollywood. A California native, Whiting has written for TIME, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, Smithsonian, and many other publications. His latest book is Gamblers, Fraudsters, Dreamers & Spies (2025). Whiting has been a Tokyo resident from the early 1960s.
