(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.)

Japan's criminal justice system has come under harsh scrutiny with the arrest, prolonged detention, and subsequent escape of former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn. Last month, a United Nations human rights panel went as far as to ask the Japanese government to accord Mr. Ghosn "compensation" for his "arbitrary" detention. The government, however, denounced the "totally unacceptable" viewpoint as based on "factual errors", and said nothing will change in the "fair" legal process.

Even before Ghosn's high-profile arrest thrust the issue into the global spotlight, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, comprising about 42,000 member attorneys, has long been fighting for reforms. Last month, it released a proposal titled "Grand Design of Criminal Justice Reform for Preventing Miscarriages of Justice". In introducing the report at the Club, three lawyers including the group's President Tadashi Ara will discuss how Japan's criminal justice system violates the rights of suspects to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, and offer ideas of how to remedy the situation.
