2025-2026 FCCJ Student Membership

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan will grant a number of Student Memberships with the aim of encouraging students to enter the journalism profession. The Membership will entitle holders to take advantage of any events and FCCJ facilities that do not require financial obligation. Specifically, Student Members may attend press conferences and events as well as make use of the library. Students can attend luncheons by paying at the front desk. The membership does not include privileges for the restaurant/bar/sushi bar unless invited by a Member and Student Members cannot be served alcohol without proper ID to prove they are 20 years of age. The Scholarship and Young Professionals Committee also plans to coordinate internships as well as opportunities for students to interact with Member journalists.

The Membership is open to any full-time undergraduate or graduate student of universities in Japan enrolled in an accredited university program through at least March 2025 and has a serious interest in exploring journalism. It is open to both Japanese citizens and foreigners.

Students can apply by submitting an application form, a resume, a copy of a valid student identification card, a passport size photo and a short cover letter. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Students who already have Membership may renew it by submitting a copy of a student ID card or a document showing their expected graduation date and an updated photo.

Note: The Student Membership is treated as an FCCJ honorary Membership and is subject to the policies of the Club. Memberships are granted on a yearly basis.  Processing may take three to four weeks.

The Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship

The Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship is an award by The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. It was created in honor of a respected long-time journalist member to encourage and support university students interested in entering journalism. Any current undergraduate or graduate student in Japan, or any Japanese student enrolled in an overseas journalism program, is eligible to apply. The award is intended to help students further their journalistic pursuits and should be used for such purposes (e.g. language courses, travel, purchase of computer equipment or books, or living expenses during a journalism internship).

2025 Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship Now Open For Applications: The Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan is seeking applicants for its 2025 Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship. Every year, the Club awards up to three scholarships to students at any level, from high school to graduate school, who show promise and dedication to journalism and a desire to join our profession. Applicants of all nationalities are invited to apply so long as they can demonstrate a desire to report on Japan in the English language. Awards are made in three categories -- print, photo and video journalism -- with applicants submitting examples of their work. The winners are chosen by the FCCJ's Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship Committee, made up of both club members and outside journalists and educators. The winners, announced at an awards banquet held at the Club, will each get 300,000 yen for their education expenses.
