As long-festering tensions erupt into open conflict in many parts of the world including, again, the Middle East, some analysts fear it is only a matter of time before the United States and its allies come to blows with China or North Korea. A group of progressive scholars and activists say that this tragic scenario is being made more likely by the failure of East Asian governments to speak constructively with each other, and with Washington. "Poor communication and misperceptions are increasing the probability of military conflict and the risk of nuclear war," say the organizers of this press conference.
The U.S. Union of Concerned Scientists, Japan's New Diplomacy and Korea Diplomacy Plaza have sponsored a quadrilateral dialogue that did include Chinese participants. This press conference will begin with a joint statement calling for more inclusive official dialogue and discussion on the outcome of the first of what they hope will be an annual effort to resume regional efforts to create a more stable, peaceful, and prosperous East Asia.
