PRESS CONFERENCE

Sexual Assaults in Okinawa
Denny Tamaki, Governor of Okinawa Prefecture

16:30-17:30, Wednesday, August 7, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Following revelations that a 25-year old U.S. Air Force serviceman and a 21 year old U.S. Marine were charged with sexual assault, it was learned Okinawan police and the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office did not disclose the cases, citing the victims' privacy.

The Foreign Ministry protested the incidents to the U.S. ambassador, but did not notify the Okinawan prefectural government. That, in turn, angered Tamaki, who lodged his own protest with the ministry over the lack of communication. Join us as Tamaki explains what happened and how Okinawa is responding to the alleged assaults.
