A Flawed Decision for Fukushima: Scientific Problems with the ALPS Water Treatment Plan
On August 24, the long-planned release of treated water stored in tanks at the Fukushima nuclear plant complex into the surrounding ocean finally began. The process will take three or four decades, and despite assurances by the International Atomic Energy Agency and Japanese government of its safety, doubts and concerns remain strong in Japan, East Asia, and the Pacific region. Arjun Makhijani is a member of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Expert Panel, which investigated the ALPS treated water discharge plan and found serious flaws with the IAEA's conclusions.
Please join us as Makhijani, Shinichi Kurokawa, professor emeritus at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization and Junichi Nukushina who represents a citizen's group concerned with radiation damages, explain the scientific problems of the IAEA investigation of the ALPS water treatment, and the Japanese government's decision to go forward with the release.
