The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), is recognized as one of the most successful global public health programs in history. Since 2003, PEPFAR-funded HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research efforts have saved an estimated 26 million lives, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. But now a cloud hangs over PEPFAR. The new American administration froze PEPFAR funding but then partially restored it pending a review that many fear will call for reducing and reorganizing U.S. global health efforts. Can the rest of the world step up and fill the gap?
That question will be one of the main topics of discussion at the 10th Asia-Pacific AIDS & Co-Infections Conference (APACC), running from June 12 through 14 here in Tokyo. At this FCCJ press conference representatives of three organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS will discuss how communities, researchers, and governments are responding to this crisis—and why Japan's leadership is urgently needed.
