PRESS CONFERENCE
How Can Asia Fortify Itself Against Trade Challenges?
Ahn Choong Yong, Distinguished Professor, the Graduate School of International Studies, Chung-Ang University, Seoul
11:00-12:00 Wednesday, August 20, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.
South Korea is set to host the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the historic city of Gyeongju from Oct 31 to Nov 1. But the region finds itself navigating a turbulent landscape of the US- led sweeping high tariffs and coercive FDI conditions.
Dr Ahn Choong Yong, a distinguished professor at the Graduate School of International Studies of Chung-Ang University in Seoul, brings extensive expertise to this discussion. He has contributed significantly to trilateral economic policy dialogue among China, Japan, and South Korea, and has written about regional economic integration issues.
He has recently published a book exploring South Korea's pioneering approach to foreign direct investment, with the world's first Foreign Investment Ombudsman system that offers systematic aftercare services on investor grievances over issues such as permits, administrative procedures, taxation, labor regulations and intellectual property rights. This model is increasingly relevant, especially in an era of geoeconomic fragmentation and supply chain reorganization, rising trend of investor-state disputes resolutions, regulatory reform, and modernization of outdated international investment agreements.
Dr Ahn, who was formerly Chairman of APEC Economic Committee and President of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, will visit the FCCJ to share his views on the main issues surrounding global trade and FDI today.
