Japan's Political Chaos: Crisis and Opportunity for the CDP

2024 is just over one month old. But it’s already seen unprecedented changes to Japan's political landscape. The slush fund scandal that engulfed the Liberal Democratic Party has led to the end of the current factional system. LDP veterans openly bicker about what to do next, while younger members criticize their elders and form their own support groups. The result is political chaos and continued low poll ratings for the party and for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Watching from the sidelines is the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. With the opening of the Diet, the CDP continues to push the LDP for a full accounting of the scandal -- especially by senior leaders of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's faction -- as all parties eye a possible general election later this year. Please join us as CDP leader Kenta Izumi discusses his party's response to the scandal, its broader legislative agenda, and its strategy to take advantage of the LDP’s weakened position.
