"Seeking Peace on the Korean Peninsula"

Kim Young Woong, Michel Chossudovsky & Kiyul Chung

Language:The speech and Q & A will be in English and Korean with interpretation

The prospects for a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula don’t seem bright. The U.S. has sent aircraft carriers to nearby waters in a show of force, and conducted joint exercises with South Korea and Japan.

North Korea, despite U.N. sanctions, is by all appearances pushing ahead with its effort to develop nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.

New U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be honored to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “under the right circumstances.” New South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who wants improved ties with the North, said he would visit Pyongyang “if the conditions are right.” Judging by a recent barrage of North Korean missile tests, conditions aren’t right yet.

The fighting in the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice, but a formal peace treaty has never been signed. Is there a path forward, toward a peace treaty? Three speakers, in Tokyo for a symposium on the

Korean peninsula, will offer perspectives from China, Russia and North America.

Dr. Kim Young Woong is a scholar at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was elected a member of the Supreme Soviet in 1989 and involved in normalizing relations between Russia and South Korea. He has visited North Korea four times, in 1991, 2010, 2013 and 2016.

Dr. Michel Chossudovsky is president and director of the Montreal-based Centre for Research on Globalization and editor of the website GlobalResearch.ca. He is the author of The Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order (2003), America's "War on Terrorism" (2005) and towards a World War III Scenario: The Dangers of Nuclear War (2011).

Dr. Kiyul Chung has been a visiting professor at the Tsinghua University in Beijing since 2009. He is editor-in-chief of The 4th Media, an English-language website. He taught at Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang from April to May of this year.
