"Kill Bill vs. Koike: Restaurateur fights back against Tokyo's COVID-19 measures"

The operator of a restaurant famous for inspiring a fight scene in "Kill Bill: Volume I" has embarked on a battle of its own: suing the Tokyo Metropolitan Government over an order for businesses to close early to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Global-Dining Inc president Kozo Hasegawa has been harshly critical of the measures ordered by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, saying they lack scientific basis and are wrecking the economy. His company, which runs 43 eateries mostly in the Tokyo area, launched a lawsuit against the city government on Monday, seeking damages of just 104 yen (about $1) but challenging the constitutionality of the anti-contagion rules and fines for noncompliance.

Hasegawa, whose company runs the cavernous Gonpachi restaurant that inspired a bloody sword battle in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film, will come to the club to talk about the lawsuit and his decision to crowdfund the legal costs, raising more than 13 million yen in just a couple days.
