"The LDP Presidential Race: Who Will Replace PM Suga?"

The sudden announcement on Friday, Sept. 3rd by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga that he would not seek re-election as Liberal Democratic Party president in the September 29th election sent shockwaves through the Japanese political world. Suga's decision, coming amidst record-low popularity polls and a looming general election this autumn, has ambitious rivals jostling to replace him. Who are the contenders, who are their allies and rivals, and, regardless of who wins, what does it all mean for the LDP and the nation in the coming weeks? Join us as three political commentators analyze the presidential race. Masato Kamikubo, of Ritsumeikan University, has written about LDP politicians, including Taro Kono, and contributes to numerous media and academic publications about modern Japanese politics. Chiyako Sato, an editorial writer at the Mainichi Shimbun, is a regular TV commentator on Japanese politics and was the paper’s first ever female head of its political division. Freelance journalist Tetsuo Suzuki writes a column on Japanese politics for Sunday Mainichi and is a well-known TV commentator.
