In his inaugural speech to parliament on October 26, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga set out a bold goal to make Japan “a carbon-neutral, decarbonized society" by 2050. He called for a virtuous cycle between the economy and the environment, and pledged to accelerate the adoption of technologies such as next-generation solar cells and carbon recycling

The European Union and South Korea have set the same goal of net-zero carbon emissions by the same date, and China, the world's biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, is aiming to have "virtually zero" emissions before 2060. And U.S. president-elect Joe Biden has pledged to return his country to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

But how exactly will Japan achieve this lofty ambition? What kind of energy mix will the nation need to adopt? And will nuclear power be a significant part of the equation?

The FCCJ has invited a distinguished panel of guests to discuss this issue. Mika Ohbayashi, is a founding member and director at Renewable Energy Institute, a nonprofit thinktank. Tom O'Sullivan is the founder and managing director at Mathyos Global Advisory, a consultancy. Hisayo Takada is an energy campaigner at Greenpeace Japan.
