PRESS CONFERENCE
Preventing the remains of war dead being used in the building of the US base at Henoko
Takamatsu Gushiken, Head of "Gamafuyaa (Cave Diggers)"
14:00-15:00 Wednesday, August 7, 2024
Language:The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation
The decades-long battle over construction of a U.S. Marine base in Okinawa's Henoko district has often involved environmental concerns. Critics claim its construction will destroy the coral in an environmentally sensitive area. But now another sensitive problem has come to light: landfill being used to construct the base contains the remains of war dead, including, so it is claimed, 228 US soldiers as well as Koreans.
Takamatsu Gushiken, also known as Gamafuyaa, is campaigning against the use of this soil "to protect the dignity of the war dead of all nationalities and origins." Please join us as he argues why it should not be used for Henoko's construction.
