China is now in its "darkest period" for human rights since the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, the Human Rights Watch said in its annual report in January, blaming governments worldwide for not taking a stronger stand against Beijing for fear of economic reprisals. Among a litany of violations cited by the group are detention of more than one million Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang; ongoing repression in Tibet and Inner Mongolia with severe restrictions on religious freedoms and speech; the crushing of liberties in Hong Kong with a harsh security law; and, silencing independent voices commenting on COVID-19 in the country.

Key representatives of the groups will address the Club on February 4, exactly one year until the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics. They will for the first time in Japan publicly appeal for an international boycott of the Games, arguing that China's blatant disregard for basic human rights makes light of respect for equality, as spelt out in the Olympic Charter.
