Japanese Politics and the Kishida Administration in 2023

Ruling Liberal Democratic Party heavyweight Shigeru Ishiba, a frequent visitor to the FCCJ, returns to offer his thoughts on Japanese politics in the Year of the Rabbit. With Prime Minister Fumio Kishida experiencing low poll ratings over his handling of the Unification Church scandal, incurring the wrath of party rivals by supporting a redistricting plan that reduces seats in LDP rural strongholds, and facing anger over tax increases to pay for additional defense spending, Kishida enters 2023 in a weak position. Talk of a "post Kishida" era has begun and veteran Ishiba is expected to play an influential role in any negotiations to pick a successor. Please join us for his unique insights on what lies ahead this year.
