PRESS CONFERENCE

Trouble in Amami: A Call for UNESCO to Investigate
Jean-Marc Takaki, Association for the protection of Amami's forest, rivers and coastal ecosystems

11:00-12:00 Thursday, August 29, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

Amami Oshima Island, located southwest of Kyushu, is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site that draws thousands of visitors from Japan and around the world. But Kagoshima Prefecture has come under fire from residents and environmental experts for failing to properly manage Amami's forests, rivers, streams, and coastal system and preserve the natural habitat. Critics accuse the prefecture of misreporting the state of Amami's conservation status in violation of the World Heritage Convention.

These concerns have led a group of residents to warn UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature of the problems. Please join us as Jean-Marc Takaki, a local activist, explains the state of Amami's natural environment and the challenges it faces.
