The Japanese government's response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster has resulted in human rights violations, mostly affecting evacuated women and children, according to a new report by Greenpeace.

The report, to be released the day before International Women's Day, outlines Japan's obligations under multiple human rights treaties and how policy failures and gender inequality within Japanese society have resulted in violations of women and children's human rights.

It examines the disproportionate economic impacts on women and children; the failure to protect internally displaced people; and violations of evacuees' right to health, both in the immediate aftermath of the triple meltdown and during decontamination and resettlement efforts. The report also addresses increased health risks to women and children, including mental health and vulnerability to the physical health impacts of exposure to ionizing radiation.

It includes eight policy recommendations that Greenpeace urges the Japanese government to implement to address ongoing violations of women and children's human rights.

Kendra Ulrich, senior global energy campaigner at Greenpeace Japan, Kazuko Ito, a lawyer and secretary general of the NGO Human Rights Now, will come to the FCCJ to explain the issues mentioned in the report. They will be joined by Noriko Matsumoto, an evacuee from Fukushima prefecture who now lives in Kanagawa prefecture. Representative of a Support Center for Evacuees, Matsumoto will discuss the issues facing evacuees.
