The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

"Japan Politics: DPP"

On Monday, November 11, Japan's parliament will decide who will become its next prime minister, and a party and its leader who will play a pivotal role in that vote's outcome will come to the FCCJ on Friday to give an idea on what to expect.

Yuichiro Tamaki, Leader of Democratic Party for the People, will visit the Press Club one day after the president of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda, the pair having met earlier to discuss strategies and possible support going into Monday's vote. DPFP is the third largest opposition party in Japan, but quadrupled its strength in the October 27th lower house election.

The Asahi Shimbun reports that our guest and his party's confidence has grown since the vote, after proving its popularity particularly with younger voters. The party has ruled out joining a Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito coalition, but the DPFP, founded in 2018, has said it will support Tamaki in Monday's vote, not Noda – at least in round one.

Dubbed "Japan's Kingmaker" by the media, our guest has called for continued low interest rates, boosting personal incomes, and a higher minimal tax threshold, and served previously in the finance ministry. He was born in Sangawa Town in Kagawa Prefecture, graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Law as well as Harvard’s Kennedy School. He won his first Diet seat in 2009 and was named leader of the new version of the Democratic Party for the People in 2020. Make your reservations now for the man who may not become King on Monday, but possibly will decide who is selected.
