PROFESSIONAL LUNCHEON

Japan's Economic Security Strategy and Germany's 'Zeitenwende'

Sandra Detzer, Member of German Parliament

11:30 - 13:00 Thursday, June 16, 2022
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

The recent flurry of summit meetings in Japan is not a one off, but a sign that Asia's oldest industrial nation is becoming a vital partner in the redesign of the global trading system – for the U.S. and also export-driven middle powers like Germany.

On the heels of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to Tokyo, another leading German politician is coming: Sandra Detzer, a member of the co-ruling Green Party. As a member of the economic committee of the Bundestag, the German parliament, she is on a official visit to investigate Japan's economic security strategy, raw materials policies and green transition.

Scholz made it clear he sees Japan as a close partner in a broad range of strategic issues such security, supply chain resilience, trade, green technologies and the development of a hydrogen economy. Detzer will explain in more detail how – from a German viewpoint – Japan's economic security strategy can contribute to urgently needed climate policies. She is also prepared to answer any questions concerning the policies of the new coalition government in Berlin and how it will govern in a time of war.
