Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare: The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice

Next in our series of Shakespeare presentations is the tragedy, "Othello, the Moor of Venice", on Saturday, February 19. Shakespeare tells how Othello, a Moorish general of Venice, has promoted Cassio as his lieutenant. This angers Iago, Othello's ensign, who was hoping for the promotion himself. He takes revenge by plotting against both Cassio and Othello, who has secretly married Desdemona, the beautiful daughter of Venetian senator Brabantio. Iago determines to use the young woman as the means to carry out his revenge.

The BBC version was directed by Jonathan Miller.
The production features Bob Hoskins as Iago, Anthony Hopkins as Othello, Penelope Wilton as Desdemona and David Yelland as Cassio. Setting the scene will be guest lecturer Stuart Varnam-Atkin, a regular contributor to our Shakespeare series. Oxford-educated Stuart has carved a unique career in Japan in the intercultural media field, including translations, narrations and acting.

Tickets for a sumptuous Venetian-themed lunch are 3,300 yen per person for members (4,400 yen for non-members).
