From a refugee camp in post WWII Manchuria, via Tokyo University, the groves of academe and the FCCJ to New York's Carnegie Hall, Tokiko Kato has developed her career as one of Japan's top singer/songwriters.
She has also made news as an unwilling but crucial eye-witness to an aircraft hi-jacking.
On the way she has contributed to worthy causes – she has supported the Japan Chernobyl Fund and medical and agricultural projects in Afghanistan.
But she doesn't see herself as a social activist. First and foremost she is a musician.
You can enjoy her many talents – and those of her accomplished daughter Yae – at the FCCJ on June 2 at a special concert – Songs for Peace in Ukraine.
(Tokiko's first visit to the FCCJ was to observe how foreign audiences react. This was research she felt she had to do before her Carnegie Hall concert in October 1988.)

1943年敗戦の色濃い満州ハルピンで生まれた加藤登紀子は京都に引揚げ、その後、東京大学在学中にシャンソン歌手としてデビューしました。
カーネギー・ホールでの公演、ヨーロッパ、アジアでの巡業、俳優、声優など多方面で活躍する中、環境問題などの活動家のため支援活動にも取り組んでいます。
今回は娘のYaeを伴ってのウクライナのチェルノブイリ原発事故被害者を支援する日本チェルノブイリ連帯基金のための慈善公演になりました。
