The Fantastic World of Cosplay

This month's photo exhibition, titled "The Fantastic World of Cosplay," may be unfamiliar to many, but it is a niche artistic market that is growing rapidly internationally. And Japan is at the forefront of that niche. Photographer Nicole Bozzao is a native of Venice who started out as a fashion photographer, capturing stunning images of mothers-to-be and newborns. Prior to coming to Japan in 2022, she also photographed European cosplayers throughout Italy. The photos on display here are as cross-section of her cosplay work in Japan and Italy. In this exhibition, Bozzao features American actress, model, and cosplayer Queen Fenix. Known as a martial artist living in Japan, Fenix's tall and agile physique, and exotic and expressive cosplay, have earned her popularity in Japan and overseas as well.

Why do cosplayers do what they do? Many cosplayers see their passion as a form of art and when they perform, they embody a character’s personality, gestures, and voice - all as part of the creative fun. Cosplay also lets them bring fiction to life and show off craftsmanship that combines fashion design and theater. It also allows people to step out of their everyday identity while also celebrating and honoring the anime or game that inspired them.
So just how popular is Cosplay and where does it fit in? The 2022 global ‘content’ market, defined as entertainment, movies and games-of which cosplay is seen as an extension of movies and games-exceeded $900 billion annually, which is second only to the automotive industry. Overseas sales of Japanese content in 2023 cleared $38 billion, exceeding the export values of the steel and semiconductor industries. According to the "Anime Industry Report 2024," the Japanese anime market reached a record high of $25 billion. Meanwhile, the Japanese cosplay costume market itself is growing yearly having generated over $230 million last year. We feel that Bozzao has captured the artistic essence and fun of this phenomena and we hope you enjoy the exhibition.

今月の写真展「コスプレ幻想の世界」は、あまり馴染みのない方も多いかもしれないものの、実は世界的に急成長を遂げているニッチなアート市場です。
ヴェネツィア出身の写真家、ニコール・ボッツァオ氏はファッションフォトグラファーとしてキャリアをスタートし、ミラノで妊婦や新生児も撮影してきました。
2022 年に来日する以前に、イタリア各地でヨーロッパのコスプレイヤーの撮影も行ないました。
本展は、日本とイタリアで活躍する彼女が、アメリカ人女優、モデル、そしてコスプレイヤーとして活躍するクイーン・フェニックス氏を中心にコスプレの世界を写真で紹介。
日本在住で格闘家としても知られるクイーン・フェニックスは、長身で俊敏な体格と、エキゾチックで表現力豊かなコスプレで、国内外で評価を得ています。

コスプレイヤーはなぜコスプレを続けるのでしょうか？多くのコスプレイヤーは、その情熱を芸術の一形態と捉え、パフォーマンスにおいてキャラクターの個性、仕草、声などを体現します。
これらはすべて、創造的な楽しみの一部です。コスプレは、フィクションに命を吹き込み、ファッションデザインと演劇を融合させた高い技術を披露する機会でもあります。
また、日常のアイデンティティから抜け出し、インスピレーションの源となったアニメやゲームを称え、敬意を表する機会でもあります。コスプレはどれほど人気があり、どのような位置づけにあるのでしょうか？
2022年の世界のコンテンツ市場（エンターテイメント、映画、ゲームと定義）は年間9,000億ドルを超え、自動車産業に次ぐ規模となりました。
2023年の日本コンテンツの海外売上高は380億ドルに達し、鉄鋼産業と半導体産業の輸出額を上回りました。「アニメ産業レポート2024」によると、日本のアニメ市場は過去最高の250億ドルに達しました。
一方、日本のコスプレ衣装市場自体も毎年成長を続けており、昨年は2億3000万ドルを超える規模となりました。
Bozzaoはこの現象の芸術的なエッセンスと楽しさを捉えて撮影しています。ぜひこの展覧会をお楽しみください。
