Film director Yo Nagatsuka has recently released a documentary that follows the life of Rika Matsumoto, the third daughter of Shoko Asahara, the former leader of Aum Shinrikyo—a religious cult that carried out the deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995. The attack, intended to disrupt a police investigation into the group, killed 14 people and injured over 6,000.
Asahara was arrested later that year and sentenced to death. His execution was carried out in 2018. Rika Matsumoto, reportedly named by her father as his heir apparent and widely known by the religious title "Acharya," has continued to face discrimination and societal stigma following her father’s arrest and execution.
She was once denied entry to university due to her family background but eventually won the right to attend through a legal battle. Today, she works as a psychological counselor. However, prejudice and misunderstanding continue to affect her life.
Nagatsuka's documentary follows Matsumoto over a six-year period, offering an inside look at the challenges she faces as the daughter of one of Japan's most notorious cult leaders. Nagatsuka will appear at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan for a screening of his documentary, followed by a press conference to answer questions from the media.
