Jose Ando, winner of the 172nd Akutagawa Prize in January, 2025 for DTOPIA and whose novel Just Jackson is set to be published in English by SOHO PRESS in January 2026 (translated by Kalau Almony), speaks about the thoughts and background behind his work. The talk will highlight the author’s portrayal of hidden resistance within the structures of discrimination and violence surrounding complex minority identities in Japanese society, illustrating young talent bringing fresh perspectives to contemporary Japanese literature.
DTOPIA (2024, Kawade Shobo Shinsha) is set on Bora Bora Island in the South Pacific and the novel revolves around the love reality show "DTOPIA," where ten men from around the world compete for one woman's affection. Among them is Keith participating as "Mr. Tokyo" with his past and present intersecting in a poignant narrative. The novel confronts contemporary issues such as love, violence, race, and gender, and was awarded the 172nd Akutagawa Prize in January 2025—as a powerful and unflinching work. His other novel, Jakuson Hitori (Just Jackson, 2022, Kawade Shobo Shinsha) is about Jackson working at a gym run by a sports brand. The mixed-race man of African and Japanese descent is rumored to be gay. When a QR code on his T-shirt sparks the online spread of a pornographic video, others suspect that he is the man in the footage. As Jackson searches for the truth, he encounters three men who share his appearance, launching a light-footed yet sharp counterattack. The novel is a striking debut that vividly captures the lives of black mixed-race individuals in Tokyo. Winner of the 59th Bungei Prize. It was nominated for the 168th Akutagawa Prize.
Jose Ando, who writes in Japanese, was born in Tokyo in 1994 and debuted in 2022 with Just Jackson, which was also published in French as Juste Jackson (Fayard) in 2024. It was nominated for the Marquis de Sade Prize, garnering international attention. His other works include Meisaishoku no Otoko (迷彩色の男=The Camouflage Man) (2023, Kawade Shobo Shinsha).
Doors open at 5:45 pm with a casual “meet the author/cocktail time” from 6:00 pm. Dinner will be served from 6:30 pm and the talk begins at 7:15 pm.
The menu is Cobb Salad, White Fish Baked with Herbs and Breadcrumbs in Tomato Sauce, Bread, Today's Dessert, Coffee or Tea, and One beverage of choice (orange juice, oolong tea, red or white wine, beer). 2025年1月に第172回芥川賞を受賞した『DTOPIA』、2026年1月にSOHO PRESSより英語版（翻訳者：Kalau Almony）が刊行予定となっている『ジャクソンひとり』を執筆した作家、安堂ホセが作品に込めた想いや創作の背景について語る。現代日本文学に新風を吹き込む若き才能が、複合的なマイノリティ性を巡る社会にうごめく差別、暴力の構造、そこに潜む抵抗の物語をどう描き出すのか――注目のトークイベント。
『DTOPIA』(2024年、河出書房新社)：南太平洋・ボラ・ボラ島を舞台に繰り広げられる恋愛リアリティショー「DTOPIA」。世界中から集まった10人の男性がひとりの女性を巡り競い合う中、Mr.東京として参加したキースが見せる過去と現在が交錯する切ない物語。愛と暴力、人種、ジェンダーといった現代社会の問題を真正面から描き切り、2025年1月に第172回芥川賞を受賞した渾身の一作。
『ジャクソンひとり』(2022年、河出書房新社)：スポーツブランドのジムで働くジャクソンは、アフリカ系と日本人のハーフでゲイと噂される青年。着ていたTシャツのQRコードが発端となり、ネットでポルノ動画が拡散され、その動画の男が自分ではないかと疑われる。真相を探る中で、同じ外見を持つ3人の男たちと出会い、軽やかに始まる逆襲――。東京に生きるブラックミックスたちの日常を鮮烈に描き出した衝撃作。第59回文藝賞受賞のデビュー作にして、第168回芥川賞候補作。
作品を通じて現代社会を鋭い視点で抉る安堂ホセが、「差別を描くこと」「多様なアイデンティティの人間の生をどう物語に落とし込むか」といった創作の根幹について語る貴重な機会。安堂は、1994年、東京都生まれ。2022年に『ジャクソンひとり』でデビュー。同作品は、2024年に出版されたフランス語版『Juste Jackson』（Fayard）が、マルキ・ド・サド賞候補となり、海外でも注目を集める。その他の著書に『迷彩色の男』(2023年、河出書房新社)がある。
