US President Donald Trump’s policy shocks are not just about tariffs and trade wars; they also imply geoeconomic upheaval, not least where Japan and China are concerned.
The Trump administration’s apparent retreat from an active and interventionist foreign policy role in key regions of the world, including Europe, has profound implications for Asia. Relations among nations within the region as well as with outside powers could see tectonic shifts, some adverse and some beneficial.
Deep Dive has arranged for two eminent economic and strategic specialists on the region to appear in person at the club to offer their expert analysis. Do not miss this opportunity to stay abreast of these key developments.
Kent E. Calder directs the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University SAIS. He recently also served for varying intervals as Dean, Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs, and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at SAIS. Prior to SAIS, Calder served as special advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to Japan; Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); tenured professor at Princeton University; lecturer on government at Harvard; and as the first executive director of Harvard University’s Program on U.S.-Japan Relations. A specialist in East Asian political economy, Kent Calder lived and researched in Japan for eleven years and elsewhere in East Asia for four years.
Yuqing Xing is Professor of Economics of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo. He served as the Director of the Capacity Building and Training Department of the Asian Development Bank Institute. He also held positions at World Institute for Development Economics Research, the Bank of Finland, United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies, and the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore. He provided consulting services to Asian Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund and Japan International Cooperation Agency. Prof. Xing’s research focuses on global value chains, international trade, foreign direct investment and Chinese economy.
