How much of what we know about yakuza comes from television and movies and how much from investigative journalism probing their secret societies?
It's a question that's near and dear to Noboru Hirosue, aka Professor Yakuza, and Jake Adelstein, author of "Tokyo Vice" and the just-released "The Last Yakuza."
To hear their answers, and make some wine-fueled fun, join us Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 7pm, for True Crime and Wine Night II. Hirosue and Adelstein will discuss and share their deep knowledge and insights on the yakuza as pop-culture fascination, sociological phenomenon and political force.
Hirosue's "Japan's New Part-Time Criminals" and "Why Do Young People Join the Yakuza" are among Japan's best-read books on the country's crime underworld. Adelstein's "Tokyo Vice" crime-reporting memoir was the basis for the hit HBO Max series (now playing on Netflix in Japan). "The Last Yakuza" digs even deeper into the dingy, stoic morass and how it's changing.
Don't miss this important talk. Both authors will sign and sell copies of their books.
This event will not be recorded. To see or hear it, you've got to be there live.
