Speaker's profile:
Ursula Hyzy, 50, started as AFP's Tokyo bureau chief in July 2015. It is her second assignment in Japan, where she worked from September 2001 to May 2005, covering economics and business for AFP.
She has spent the greater part of her carrier abroad. She was based in Washington DC from 1996 to 1999 and in Moscow from 2005 to 2009, covering general news in Russia and the former-USSR (excluding the Baltic states). She also headed the Warsaw regional bureau, which covers six countries (Poland, the three Baltic states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia).
Immediately before arriving in Tokyo she was working in the economics department at AFP in Paris where she covered French macroeconomics.
Since first joining AFP in 1992, she has also been a regional correspondent in northern France, based in Lille, and has spent a large amount of time in the economics department at Paris headquarters, reporting as well as editing. She has also worked in Lyon and for the Africa and Europe desks in Paris.
Ms. Hyzy studied economics at university in Paris as well as Russian at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (Institute of Oriental Languages). She spent part of her high school years in the American and Soviet school systems. She lived in Poland in the second half of the 1970s and in the USSR between 1979 and 1983, during the Brezhnev and Andropov periods. Her native language is French. She speaks English, Russian and Polish.

The speaker is appearing gratis. Ticket price is 2,000 yen and includes a light buffet dinner and two drinks. Additional drinks will be available at normal prices from the bar.
