Speech:The Japanese government has been criticised for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak for such issues as its low testing rate, which has been blamed for a rise in cases with no known transmission links at a time when neighbouring South Korea and Taiwan have all but stemmed the spread of infections.
But Kazuto Suzuki of Hokkaido University's Graduate School of Public Policy argues that the "Japan model" is working, as evident from the relatively low Covid-19 death rate.
Suzuki will discuss, via video, the merits of the cluster-based approach in containing infections, while maintaining freedoms and economic activity that will prove more sustainable over the long term.
