Japan's prime minister from June 2010 to September 2011, Naoto Kan will always be remembered for his handling of the triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident) that struck while he was in office. The crisis he managed was widely cited as Japan's worst since World War II – until now.
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Japan's economy and its long-term social structures will almost certainly dwarf what happened in 2011. As a leader steeled in disaster, and who famously made his political name by confronting corrupt officials at the Ministry of Health during the 1996 HIV tainted blood scandal, Kan is perhaps uniquely qualified to comment on the current crisis. So far he has mostly confined his criticism to his Twitter account @NaotoKan. He has agreed, however, to discuss his concerns with the FCCJ.
