"Parody in Japan" by Kunitoshi Oka, Lawyer

This month's spat between the FCCJ and Tokyo Olympic officials over the cover of the club's Number 1 Shimbun has prompted some to say that parody and satire do not exist in Japan. That would be news to Mad Amano.
Perhaps the most famous parodist in modern Japanese history, Amano long used ridicule against authority figures. He was the subject of a landmark copyright infringement case decades ago when he used a montage photograph that included images of Bridgestone tires to satirize the environmental destruction wrought by ski resorts. Some Japanese lawyers have used the Amano case, which went all the way to the Supreme Court, to argue that parody does not excuse writers or artists from copyright infringement in Japan.
Amano's lawyer in that case, Kunitoshi Oka, will discuss its implications in light of the Number 1 Shimbun spat. Oka believes that the FCCJ should not have deleted the magazine's cover from its website, saying that the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee misinterpreted the copyright law and its trademark rights.
