The Covid-19 pandemic has stretched Japan's hospitals to the brink of collapse. Medical professionals are overworked, and hospital beds and personal protective equipment are in short supply. As a result, hospitals have had to turn away record numbers of patients.
Although the number of new infections is declining in Japan, Takeshi Shimazu, chair of the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine, said in a statement on May 13th that the country's health infrastructure was under serious and sustained pressure. He added that Japan must prepare for the possibility of a new wave of infections.
Shimazu will address the FCCJ on the current state of the emergency medical care system, and discuss what needs to be done to fortify the system against potential future shocks.
