Action for Safe Abortion Japan
Abortion pills will be approved in Japan later this year. But according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, women may be required to obtain consent from the partner in order to receive the pills, in accordance with the “Maternal Body Protection Law". The 1948 law allows women to ask for a surgical abortion under certain circumstances. In many cases, women’s clinics ask for the consent of the women and their partners, even though the law recognizes that in certain cases (partner is unknown, already gone, etc) such consent is unnecessary or unobtainable. The cost of the pills could also be so expensive that many women would not be able to afford them, which risks driving them online to purchase cheaper but more dangerous pills.

Two activists will speak on the following:

1. Outline of Maternal Body Protection Law and partner consent
2. Actual cases under the partner consent requirement
3. Pricing of abortion pills
4. Poverty in Japan
5. WHO, human rights essential medical care for everyone
