PRESS CONFERENCE
AI Lawsuits by Japanese Media
Shiro Nakamura, Chairperson, Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (NSK), The Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association
11:00-12:00 Tuesday, October 28, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper companies filed a lawsuit in August against U.S. AI startup Perplexity AI seeking damages of about ¥2.17 billion in the Tokyo District Court for allegedly using a large number of its articles and images for a generative AI-powered search engine without permission. Yomiuri claims that this has caused a drop in advertising revenues that is an infringement of its business interests. The Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun later in the month also filed a lawsuit against Perplexity in Tokyo.
The lawsuits are individual actions, but the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association (Nihon Shinbun Kyokai) has supported these efforts and actively lobbied the government for copyright law reform concerning generative AI. For more on the cases and support extended to the newspapers, Shiro Nakamura, chairperson of the NSK as well as chairman of the Asahi Shimbun Company, will join us at the FCCJ to explain details.
