Akihiko Tanaka will discuss Japan's aid efforts at a time of multiple crises around the world, including the Ukrainian war and the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, as well as Japan's overall aid policy following the update of the national security strategy in December.
Japan is the third-largest OECD donor country and the largest in Asia. JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is one of the world's biggest aid agencies with an ODA (Official Development Assistance) budget of 560 billion yen in 2022.
Among the other projects on the agency's agenda for 2023 and beyond are port development in Bangladesh; India's first high-speed railroad; sustainable financing of environmentally friendly industries in Ecuador; support for start-up innovation in Africa; and, in collaboration with UNICEF, the enhancement of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities to prevent infectious diseases in Afghanistan.
Tanaka assumed the presidency of JICA in April 2022, marking his second time in office. A former professor of international politics, he was previously President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
