On March 27, 2014, Shizuoka District Court released Iwao Hakamada—the former professional boxer sentenced to death for murder—from prison and granted him a retrial as there is reason to believe the evidence against him had been fabricated.
On June 11, 2018, Tokyo High Court reversed the decision but could not order his detention and execution.
Hakamada's defense team has appealed to the Supreme Court. If it rejects the appeal, Hakamada could be detained and executed: an unprecedented situation in the world.
The speakers will highlight the malfunctioning Japanese court system that could see Hakamada, who was wrongfully imprisoned for 48 years, face reimprisonment and execution.They will also present a video with never-before-seen footage of Hakamada speaking about his case and showing his physical condition over the last 3 years.
