Ending the War in Ukraine

When Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, it was to the city of Lviv that many refugees fled. Andriy Sadovyy, the city's mayor, reckons that about five million refugees have passed through the city since February last year. Many thousands of these refugees have been sick or injured, putting enormous strain on the city's resources. With winter approaching again, Sadovyy fears more Russian attacks on the city's infrastructure. Yet, he insists, 'We are unbroken'.

Sadovyy is part of a delegation from Lviv's city council, visiting Japan this week to explain the situation on the front lines. Ukrainian politicians are hoping that Japan will expand its exports of what are euphemistically called "non-lethal defense assistance", in addition to anti-drone and anti-missile systems. They also want Japan's help with reconstructing the country once the war ends.

Among those attending the FCCJ press conference will be architect Shigeru Ban, who has unveiled a plan to help build a rehabilitation center for war-affected Ukrainians in Lviv.

Sadovyy is one of Ukraine's best-known politicians. He was reelected mayor of Lviv for the third time in 2015. He stood in the election for Ukraine's president in 2019.
