PRESS CONFERENCE
Tsuguhiko Kadokawa, former chairman of KADOKAWA
Nobuo Gohara, Attorney-at-Law

15:30-16:30 Tuesday, June 16, 2026
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Tsuguhiko Kadokawa, the former chairman of publishing giant KADOKAWA and current honorary chairman of the Kadokawa Cultural Promotion Foundation, was given a suspended prison sentence in January 2026 in a high-profile bribery case linked to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan will host a press conference by the former chairman, who at 82 years of age is among the most prominent figures swept up in the Olympic bribery scandal. Kadokawa has consistently maintained his innocence while also becoming a fierce critic of Japan’s “hostage justice” system.

In response to the January sentence of two and a half years in prison suspended for four years, Kadokawa is suing the government, claiming that his arrest and 226-day pre-trial detention were unlawful. In an escalation of his legal battle, Kadokawa will file a lawsuit on June 16 seeking damages from the current president of KADOKAWA and the lawyer who chaired the internal company committee that investigated him.

Kadokawa and his legal counsel, lawyer and former prosecutor Nobuo Gohara, will speak to us about the case and the shift in legal strategy.
