PRESS CONFERENCE

Challenging 'Hostage Justice': A Legal Stand Against Prolonged Detention
Takashi Takano, Attorney at Law
Tomoya Asanuma, Nurse/Filmmaker

10:00-11:00 Tuesday, April 1, 2025

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English and Japanese with English interpretation.

Japan's criminal prosecution system has long been criticized for so-called "hostage justice" practices, where suspects are detained for extended periods to pressure confessions, often lasting months or even years. On March 24, 2025, a lawsuit was filed at the Tokyo District Court challenging the constitutionality of the Code of Criminal Procedure's provisions on detention and bail.

The lawsuit, brought by four plaintiffs, seeks to end these controversial practices. Coming to the club to speak on this issue are attorney Takashi Takano and Tomoya Asanuma, a plaintiff who was detained for three and a half months before being acquitted.
