PRESS CONFERENCE
Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi

11:00-12:00 Tuesday, August 29, 2023
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Cleaning up Mount Fuji

Overflowing sewage, litter, crowded car parks and pollution from electricity generators are what welcome many visitors to Japan's most iconic mountain. As governor of Yamanashi, one of the two prefectures straddled by Mt. Fuji, Kotaro Nagasaki wants to rid the area of the problems of excess tourism and recreate an environment more appropriate to its status as a World Heritage site. That could mean limiting visitor numbers – possibly by banning private vehicles and building a railway. Charging fewer tourists more for a quality experience could also bring cash into the local economy, which currently benefits little from Mt Fuji's popularity. Come and hear from the governor about what he sees as a crisis on Fuji and how it should be fixed.
