"Okinawa's New Governor"

Denny Tamaki, Governor of Okinawa Prefecture

The speech and Q&A will be in Japanese with English Interpretation

Denny Tamaki is the latest face in the standoff between the central government and Okinawa, where the majority of Japan's U.S. military presence can be found.

In the latest gubernatorial election, Tamaki claimed victory over the LDP-backed Atsushi Sakima in the closely watched race, which turned out to hand Tamaki a comfortable win.

The son of a U.S. serviceman and a Japanese mother, Tamaki still vows to block attempts to build new runways for the U.S. military in Henoko, amid outcry from a local population that says the U.S. bases have brought crime, noise, accidents and pollution.

In the standoff's latest twist, Tamaki vehemently condemned the transport ministry's decision to overturn a previous ruling revoking approvals for landfills around the coast of Henoko.

At the FCCJ the new governor of Okinawa will be addressing questions on the base relocation debate, as well as broader economic and healthcare topics in Okinawa. Beyond the base issue, Okinawa is experiencing a mass inflow of tourists while maintaining one of Japan's highest birthrates.
