The government's decision to release contaminated water from the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean has raised concerns not only in Japan, but also in other countries, most notably South Korea and China. The Japanese government claims the treated water poses no threat to the environment or marine life and the move has been endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. But environmentalists and others opposed to the release of the contaminated water say that tritium cannot be removed from the water and has the potential to be dangerous to marine life.

The topic has been widely debated in South Korea and two lawmakers and a representative of the country’s fisheries will come to the Club to explain their position and concerns.
