Next Month's Lower House Election
Fumitake Fujita, Co-President, Nippon Ishin (Japan Innovation Party)

16:00-17:00 Wednesday, January 21, 2026
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

The new year has begun with a political bang as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called a snap Lower House election, betting that her high approval ratings will carry the Liberal-Democratic Party to victory.

The prospects look more mixed for the LDP's smaller coalition partner, Nippon Ishin, or the Japan Innovation Party. The rightwing populist group based in Osaka was not consulted in advance about the sudden decision to hold the election next month. The contest will force it to compete for the same voters against not only the LDP, but also the Sanseito and the Democratic Party for the People. Meanwhile, the moderate left has joined forces to form a single new party that will avoid such cannibalization.

Please join us to hear Nippon Ishin's co-president Fumitake Fujita explain his party's strategy for prevailing in this election and what it might mean for the future of its coalition with the LDP. This will be our first press conference of the election.
