PRESS CONFERENCE
The New Era of Okinawa
Genta Koja, Governor of Okinawa
09:00-10:00 Monday, November 9, 2026
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
In September, Genta Koja defeated incumbent Denny Tamaki in Okinawa's gubernatorial election, signaling a dramatic change in policies for the island prefecture. Koja, who was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and other parties, has voiced support for the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to Henoko, a move opposed by his predecessor.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan will host Koja to lay out his vision for what he calls a "New Era of Okinawa," which includes "realistic approaches to base issues" as well as an economic growth strategy. But Koja's new approaches face challenges right away, especially after a U.S. Marine was indicted on suspicion of murdering a Japanese woman.
