Everything changed in France with the May 7 election of Emmanuel Macron. At 39, he became France's youngest ever president, obliterating the challenge from the right and left and leading his fledging party – La Republique En Marche – to success in parliamentary elections.
So, full speed ahead for France's "Golden Boy." Or maybe not, Macron rode to victory on a wave of disaffection with the traditional political parties in France, but soon saw his own approval rating plummet from 62 percent to just 36 percent, with only 23 percent of French voters believing that the country is heading in the right direction.
To explain France's current direction, French Ambassador Laurent Pic will come to the Club to speak on September 19. Ambassador Pic will offer insights into Brexit, France-EU relations and relations between France and Japan.
Ambassador Pic joined the French Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1993, was previously in charge of EU development policy and later became Secretary-General of European Affairs at the Prime Minister's Office. He was appointed Ambassador to Japan in June of this year.
