PRESS CONFERENCE

Money Politics, Japanese Voters, and the Oct. 27th Election
Tomoaki Iwai, Professor emeritus, Nihon University
Rintaro Nishimura, Associate, Japan Practice, The Asia Group

11:00-12:00 Tuesday, October 22, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English or Japanese with English interpretation.

Once again, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party heads into a general election facing public anger over a political slush funds scandal. Once again, the LDP, led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, promises to clean itself up. The scandal, the worst in over a decade, has led to the dissolution of most of the party's political factions, the source of the funds, and to some scandal-tainted members being denied formal party support. Yet LDP lawmakers, even as they apologize for the excesses of money politics, defend the basic need for factions and all manner of funding to properly do their job.

Join us as Tomoaki Iwai, one of Japan's foremost experts on money politics and a regular television commentator, and Rintaro Nishimura, a leading analyst of voter trends, explain what Japan's LDP money politics is about, and how voters may respond when they go to the polls on Oct. 27th.
