PRESS CONFERENCE
Ingrida Simonyte, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania
Lithuania-Japan Strategic Partnership Forged in the Complicated Times: New Opportunities for Cooperation and Joint Response to Global Challenges
14:30-15:30 Friday, October 28, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Ingrida Simonyte is visiting Japan as part of celebrations for the 100th anniversary this year of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The visit is to mark a relationship "based on shared fundamental values of freedom, democracy, rule of law, and protection and promotion of human rights," according to a statement from the Embassy of Lithuania in Japan.
Prime Minister Simonyte's visit comes against the backdrop of the challenges faced by the international community following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which destabilised the security environment in Europe and has worldwide implications.
Lithuania and Japan have both condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and are two of the more than 40 countries that have referred Russia to the International Criminal Court for its actions.
Locked between the other Baltic States of Belarus and Latvia that were occupied by the former Soviet Union, Lithuania has a unique perspective on relations with Russia. Those relations have been increasingly testy since the last Soviet troops left Lithuania in 1993 and the country prioritised relations with the European Union and NATO.
Prime Minister Simonyte will hold a press conference at the FCCJ and provide an update on the impact of Russia's invasion on the Baltic States and implications for the future of Europe. The Prime Minister is accompanied on the visit by a trade mission comprising more than 20 Lithuanian companies in technology and agricultural industries.
